This gentle yet powerful practice taps into the deep connective tissues of the body, promoting true restoration, healing, and regrowth. About Owen

Owen Freiberger

Owen Freiburger, Through Breath's newest Instructor, was introduced to yoga in the early 1980s by a beloved friend who taught community classes at the local YWCA. She loaned him a cassette tape which he used to practice for many years, sharing his practice time with friends and family and eventually pursuing a full time career in the field. In 2004 he earned his 200 RYT from Senior Iyengar Instructor Nancy Stechert. Owen’s understanding of yoga is deeply rooted in the philosophy and discipline of BKS Iyengar and permeates his personal and teaching practices.

After completing Yoga Alliance Certification, Owen immediately established East Village Yoga in Georgetown. Within that first year he was recruited by Federal Occupational Health in Washington DC, partnering with the Department of Defense, to create a yoga-based fitness program in Federal offices and agencies in the Federal Triangle. His students came from the EPA, House of Representatives, FBI, U.S. Military and other federal, district and local governments. His work began to evolve to the arena of application-based yoga and its physical, mental, emotional and spiritual tools for the treatment of PTSD, anxiety, grief, addiction and other trauma-related issues.

This work continued in over 50 countries in the next 15 years. Owen completed certifications and degrees in a variety of healing modalities and alternative medicine styles, adding herbal medicine, Chinese medicine, Thai traditional medicine, Ayurveda and a variety of body work methods to his toolkit. A graduate of New Mexico School of Therapeutics, he found a blend of hands-on modalities that coexisted well with his alignment-based style of yoga and complemented that with the energetic healing power of touch, nature and plants.

His recent yoga teaching certifications include Yin yoga, mindfulness, yoga philosophy and mindful eating. After 30 years of traveling and countless hours teaching and studying, Owen now brings his unique method and message to students and teachers around the world, actively practicing and teaching holistic flow yoga, leading Yin, restorative and vinyasa classes, workshops and retreats while continuing to contract with health and helping agencies to provide leadership, teaching and support for corporate and community wellness.
